Day 8 – What is the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to you?
Wow…so many weird things have happened to me but I’m not sure what would be the weirdest. Today we had the most completely inappropriate/sexually harassing 60+ year old waitress EVER at Mountain House…that was weird. But it was more weird for JT because that’s who she was harassing.
There was also the time I got a ceramic dragon & poem as a valentine’s day gift from a secret admirer.
Oh yes – thought of a good one. The summer after my freshman year of high school I went to Europe with an organization called People to People. We traveled to England, France, Monaco, & Italy. While in Marseilles, France, I stayed with a French host family for 3 days. The family consisted of a mother (very friendly), father (away on business), and twins (a boy & a girl, 12 years old). They were welcoming, but spoke almost no english and I spoke no french. The little girl was obsessed with sniffing my hair (weird thing #1). The mother was a kindergarten teacher so I went to school with her one day. I could not communicate with anyone there, and all of a sudden a little kindergarten boy named Noah comes up to me and starts speaking fluent English to me. (fascinating thing #1). His family had moved to Marseilles from the U.S. and he was bilingual. I followed Noah around for the rest of the day because he was the only person I could talk to. He was my lifeline. Oh the irony.
The last night I stayed with them, we all went to a birthday party for a friend of the family who was turning 13. I don’t know if this is normal to French culture, but when we arrived all the parents went into one room and mingled while drinking wine and all the kids stayed in the living room and danced. We listened to the same song over and over and over – “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley. (weird thing #2). I am sitting on the couch minding my own business and not knowing what to do with myself because I can’t communicate with anyone.
Someone finally cut off the music and everyone sat down in a circle. I joined the circle but had no idea what was going on. They then passed a bucket around and everyone drew a piece of paper out of it, so I did the same when the bucket came to me. Next thing I know, I am being blindfolded and led out of the room. I can’t remember what was going through my mind at this time, but I’m sure there were several thoughts bouncing around in there. I am walked into another room & hear a door close behind me, so I take my blindfold off thinking I am alone. Except that when I take my blindfold off, I am not alone, I’m in the bathroom with a 13ish year old french boy (weird #3). I then realized that I was taking part in some version of spin the bottle or something like that, and I start freaking out and going, “No, no no no.” The boy seemed embarrassed and said “ok” and then I just left. Weird. Then as we were leaving I started to realize that about half of the kids (13ish year olds) were drunk or halfway there. (weird #4)
